Barney Google (later Barney Google and Snuffy Smith) was a long-running American comic strip by cartoonist Billy DeBeck (1890-1942). The strip debuted in 1919 and soon led to spin-off merchandise such as toys and housewares. The strip also inspired this piece of sheet music, "Barney Google (with the Goo-Goo Googly Eyes)" written by Billy Rose in 1923. The song was a big hit, and characterized many of Barney's traits, including his horse Sparkplug and "a wife three times his size." The song was one of the best known tunes of the 1920s and many, including Eddie Cantor, The Happiness Boys, and later The Andrews Sisters, sang it to great success. DeBeck was widely praised because of the strip's sometimes biting parody; it is known for important contributions to both the English language and to popular culture. Inspiring the work of many cartoonists who followed, Barney Google was also recognized by the National Cartoonists Society.
