Entertainer George M. Cohan wrote the song "Over There" in 1917, during World War I. The song was popular with soldiers and civilians alike during both World Wars. Cohan later recalled that the song came to him during a train ride from New Rochelle to New York City. President Franklin Roosevelt presented Cohan with the Congressional Gold Medal in 1936. for this and other songs.
