A popular song from the early days of New York's Tin Pan Alley music publishing area, "The Sidewalks of New York" is probably best known as the official campaign song of unsuccessful 1928 presidential candidate Alfred (Al) Smith. The well-known lyrics appealed to city dwellers, who found them familiar; but they tended to alienate the rural community, which favored rival candidate Herbert Hoover uin that election. Regardless, the song became a fixture in popular culture and is still performed often in contemporary times.
