The individuals depicted in the Shekaft-e Salman reliefs all stand oriented towards the cave making gestures of worship. Their garments and idealized physical attributes are considered to be signatures of Elamite royalty. They were variously carved between the 12th century and perhaps the 7th century BC in connection with the cultic activities of Elamite rulers and their families in open-air highland sanctuaries.
