Separated by the Shellhaven Creek, this photograph shows the oil refineries at Shell Haven (right-foreground) and Coryton. Shell Haven was the first oil refinery on the Thames Estuary and operated from 1916 until 1999. At the time Aerofilms took this photograph, Coryton was owned by the American Vacuum Oil Company, later Mobil. The site was formerly occupied by the Kynochs explosives factory.
