Based on a novel by Bakin and Razan, Hokusai's work spanned 61 volumes. Each volume contains seven double-sided woodblock prints by Hokusai. The first six volumes were published in 1805, five in 1807, and 50 volumes between 1828 and 1835.
This work is based on the classic Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan, attributed to Shi Naian. It is considered one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.
Set during the Song Dynasty, the novel tells the story of a group of 108 outlaws who gather in the mountains to form a sizable army before the government finally grants them amnesty and sends them on campaigns to resist foreign invaders and suppress rebel forces.
