William Pierce Stubbs, artist. Oil on canvas. Ca. 1880. Brigantine DAPHNE; port broadside view; full sail. Passing headlands with lighthouse. Crew on deck along with family of captain. All parties on poop deck are identifiable (relatives of donor). Donor (grandson of Capt. William J. Copeland of Thomaston) believes that the painting was painted for Capt. Copeland by a Boston, Mass. port painter for $10, and depicts Capt. Copeland's current command. 23 x 32.5 frame. Few ship portraits contain pictures of as many identified people as this one. Captain William J. Copeland (1845-1894) can be seen on the poop deck, holding his sextant. His wife Ella Mae is holding a parasol, and their children Albert and Myrna are near them. Donor believes the son was 7 or 8 years old, dating the painting to 1879-1880. A relative, James Speed (also a captain but not aboard in that capacity) is at the wheel of this Thomaston vessel.
