Joey Mazzarino, a puppeteer and head writer at Sesame Street, and his wife adopted their daughter from Ethiopia. As two white parents raising an African-American daughter, Mazzarino anticipated that "issues of skin color would come up." When his daughter was five-years-old, she would play with dolls that had long, blonde, straight hair. In response, Mazzarino wrote a song called "I Love My Hair." The Sesame Street crew created a Muppet, Segi, to perform Marrarino's song. Lyrics of the song included "I really, really, really love my hair. Wear a clippy or in a bow or let it sit in an Afro. My hair looks good in a cornrow. It does so many things you know....." The song struck a chord with African American girls around the world and Segi has since become a series regular.
