Men's shirts subtly changed in shape throughout the 1800s. This is typical of 1840s fashions with its high collar, gathered frills and pleated sleeves. The amount of exposed shirt front depended on the style of the waistcoat which was sometimes cut very low. Occasionally the front was entirely covered by a colourful cravat.
