Shoe buckles were worn by both men and women, and remained in fashion for most of the 18th century. The small functional silver buckles of the early 1700s became larger during the 1720s. By the mid-18th century colour and sparkle were added with gemstones or paste. By 1790 shoe buckles were falling out of use except as part of ceremonial or court dress.
