Birgit Jürgenssen worked with constellations and relationships which were shaped by identification, gender-specific projections, and physicality. She placed her objects between everyday life and role play, which was enhanced by her membership in the feminist-oriented group of artists DIE DAMEN (with Evelyne Egerer, Birgit Jürgenssen, ONA B., Ingeborg Strobl, and Lawrence Weiner). By physically identifying with the material world, Jürgenssen displayed the latent power of objects and by doing so explored the general conditions of ideational depictions of the feminine. The sculpture Schuhsessel [Shoe Chair] presents itself as a hermaphrodite between a chair and a stiletto and at the same time displays properties of a sexually charged cult object.
