Isaac Shoenberg was born in Pinsk, Russian Empire (now Belarus), to Yuli Shoenberg a timber merchant. The family name Shoenberg was the Yiddish version of German name pronounced “Sheinberg”. Isaac was the oldest of 7 siblings; Genia (1881-1942), Fania (1883-1922), David (1887-1977), Aaron (known as Archik by the family 1890-1941), and Zlata (1899-1965).
Genia was a dentist; Aaron had learning difficulties and suffered from epilepsy. Isaac sent money to his parents to cover the costs of their search for effective medical treatment. Both Aaron and Genia were killed by the Nazi’s during WWII; Genia in October 1942 and Aaron in August 1941.
Fania (“Fanny”) left Russia for Toronto in 1913 where she started a shoe business. She married, later changing her name from Cohen to Constant.
Neither David or Zlata married. They both came to live with Isaac in London during the 1920s.
