About the craft: Sholapith also referred to as Indian cork is a milky-white spongy plant botanically known as Aeschynomene aspera. Shola grows in wild, water logged and marshy areas of Bengal and has unique properties of being pure white and delicate.
There is a continued relevance of Sholapith in Bengali lifestyle and culture. The symbolic abstraction of emotions using Shola is imbibed in the day to day life of the Bengalis. Even today, it is a common sight in Bengali households to see Shola flowers hanging at the entrance, signifying the belief that it would bring prosperity and peace.
