Black-Figure Hydria (Shoulder view from above)

Lydos

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

On the shoulder: four warriors fighting over the body of a fifth. The leftmost warrior is nude save for his weapons, the two at the centre wear cuirasses, and the fourth warrior wears a tunic. All wear crested Corinthian helmets and greaves. The fallen warrior is bearded and lies face down. He still wears his tunic (decorated with small crosses) and armour (helmet, shield, lying flat on the ground). The shields of the warriors attacking from the right bear a bird flying to the right and a cock as blazons.

On the body: from left, Dionysos facing right (ivy wreath, holding two ivy branches and a kantharos decorated with a horserider), a woman facing right (Ariadne or Amphitrite, with her red-dot-patterned himation drawn over her head), and Poseidon facing left (laurel (?)-leaf crown, trident). Both male gods wear a long tunic (white with a red stripe), with a red mantle over the shoulders.

Above the shoulder, alternating red and black tongues; main panel framed by lotus-palmette festoons. The figures stand on a thick glaze line, with two red lines below. Above the foot, upward pointing rays in a reserved zone.
