Shovelers

Flint, Walter Leroyca. 1936-1937

Cleveland, United States

A tribute to both physical strength and deprivation, the strong lean figures in the image do manual labor. The sweeping lines near the feet of the men convey activity even as the figures themselves are frozen in a moment of activity, almost reminiscent the energetic poses of Rodin's castings. The print is stamped "Federal Art Project." Signed W. LeRoy Flint in pencil in lower right; title in lower left.
