The artist and then Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil presented at the United Nations at the invitation of the organization's Secretary General, Kofi Annan. Accompanied by percussionist Gustavo di Dalva and guitarist Sergio Chiavazzoli, Gil performed in the hall of the UN General Assembly. The show aimed to pay tribute to the victims of the attack on the United Nations building in Baghdad, which took place a month earlier, in which the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Brazilian diplomat Sérgio Vieira de Mello, died. At the end of the performance, Kofi Annan joined on stage and played the atabaque in Toda Menina Baiana, receiving a standing ovation.
