Influenced by her mother’s traditionally tiled stoves, Janssen fascination with the gravity of the furnace
in the European home was ignited from a young age.
A graduate in Fine Arts, she received a scholarship for Design and Architecture from the Federal Chancellery of Austria in 2017, and fuses European history and customs into her creations.
After researching the prominence of the domestic furnace throughout European history, Janssen captures its almost animistic character with this concealed object. The smouldering heart of the home has long been the object of superstitions and mysterious customs; leading to a status tantamount to a living creature. Her shrouded furnace concept updates these age-old tomes, highlighting the modern stove’s often hidden place in the home. Swathed in Ceramic drapery, her still-functioning stove retains its symbolic value as a source of warmth but becomes an embodiment of the mystery that has surrounded fire since the dawn of time.
