As a frontline photo-reporter Massimo Berruti has worked in many of the world’s “hot spots”. His work focuses on social issues such as poverty, war and immigration, with a particular interest in often mute and ignored marginal territories.
In 2007 Berruti participated in the "atlante italiano 007. Rischio paesaggio" by examining illegal construction in Sicily. The sharpness of his black & white images exasperates the condition of abandonment and abuse. The most disturbing element emphasised in Berruti’s work is the indifference toward the exploitation of the landscape: a confrontation between archaeology and unlawful construction reveals an alarming condition that implicates not only our aesthetic sensibility, but our conscience.
