This table is an exceptionally fine example of the carved furniture produced in London during the mid-1700s. The apron of the table shows Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, a reference to rural pastimes at a country house. When the table was first made, the white marble top would have been the most expensive and admired part. In fashionable houses, table tops and mantelpiece surrounds were usually finished in matching marble. Silverware used for a formal meal is displayed on the table. Marble-topped tables were ideal for serving hot food and beverages since marble is unaffected by heat and liquids.
