  • Critic's Note: Soun Hong employs found imagery such as photographs, newspaper clippings, anonymous postcards, and scraps of advertisements taken from magazines and other publications as the basis for his paintings. His work addresses a variety of issues, ranging from the theoretical language of representation embedded in the histories of painting and photography, to notions of marginalization and the construction of cultural identity. Frequently painted in muted monochromes, Hong uses image fragments culled from photographs depicting war, genocide, poverty, tragic accidents, and acts of terrorism to analyze the schism that exists between reality and its representation. His highly crafted, painstakingly detailed paintings probe the aestheticization of violence and the trafficking of images in contemporary culture. Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction and the artistic traditions of Eastern and Western painting, Hong creates an alluring visual ambiguity that elicits uneasy feelings in viewers.
