The number of victims from the communist period (1945-1989) is as high as two million. The victims were political prisoners and deportees, slave labourers in the camps, young people forced to do hard labour as part of their military service, people evicted from their family homes, people whose “cadre files” prevented them from pursuing the career of their choice, and those who were murdered without trial or tried and then executed. In this room, we have grouped together photographs received from families broken, martyred and murdered under communism.
