On 13 March 1938 Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. After nearly three months' struggle to obtain exit papers, various interrogations and arrests, the Freud family were finally able to leave Vienna on the Orient Express on 4 June 1938. The train took them to Paris where they stayed in the home of close family friend Marie Bonaparte before continuing their journey to London. In this photograph Freud and his daughter Anna look out from the window of the Orient Express as they leave behind the city that had been their home, Vienna.
