Sign for the GWR New Swindon Park, Faringdon Road, Swindon

In 1844, a plot of land was purchased by the Great Western Railway from local landowner, Lt Col Vilett. Situated to the west of the newly-built rows of workers' houses, the land was to be used as a cricket ground. It eventually evolved into a public park with greenhouses and formal gardens.
