This fragment is embroidered in chain stitch with a pearl roundel design, a pattern that spread from Central Asia and became extremely popular in China during the Sui and early Tang dynasties. Although pearl roundel patterns are basically created with weaving techniques, this fragment provides a rare example of this motif rendered in embroidery.
