Silk with Flowers and Sprays

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

Textiles made using French silk during the 1740–50s are particularly noteworthy for their designs which convey wavy flowers on a plain or argyle-pattern background. Here, the fabric lining comprises a modified plain weave structure which is divided into four groups based on the pattern, revealing different textures including horizontal stripes and scattered dots. The patterns are produced using a swivel weave technique to produce an undulating wave pattern.
