Brought to North America by the first French missionaries, crosses and crucifixes were later distributed among the Aboriginals who had converted to Catholicism. During the fur trade period, they were highly prized as trade goods, although for many they held no religious significance. This magnificent cross was made by Charles Arnoldi, a silversmith active in Montreal from 1779 to 1817.
