Silver Lobed Bowl

The unusual shape of this bowl comes from pre-Islamic Persian prototypes, but the decoration is distinctly Mongol. Pieces decorated in this style have been found across western Asia, and are particularly associated with the Golden Horde, which ruled in what is now Ukraine, southern Russia and the Caucasus from the 13th to 15th century. However, this particular bowl stands apart from other comparable items due the vitality of the decoration. One of the animals has a dragon's body with a long serpentine neck, but with a bearded human face. Another animal at the side has a quite natural shape until one looks at the head which continues seamlessly into a lively scroll. Even one of the panels which appears at first just to be an interlacing vine design has the vine issuing from human-headed flowers. This outpouring of imagination suggests a post-Mongol origin for the bowl, in which pre-existing Mongol designs were improved and expanded upon.

Interestingly, the bowl seems to have had a ‘second life’ very different to its first. A later craftsman has added Armenian letters to the inside of the bowl, suggesting a possible Christian reuse of this item.

الشكل غير الاعتيادي لهذه السلطانية مأخوذٌ من الأنماط الفارسية التي تعود لحقبة ما قبل الإسلام، لكن التزيين منغولي بشكل واضح. وُجدت أعمال مزينة بهذا الشكل في أرجاء غرب آسيا، وهي ذات صلة خاصة بالقبيلة الذهبية التي حكمت المنطقة التي هي حالياً أوكرانيا وجنوب روسيا والقوقاز بين القرنين الثالث عشر والخامس عشر. لكن هذه السلطانية تحديداً تتميز عن الأخرى المشابهة بحيوية التزيين. فلأحد الحيوانات جسد تنين مع رقبة طويلة ملتوية، ورأس إنسانيّ بلحية. حيوانٌ آخر على الجانب يبدو بشكل طبيعي، إلى أن ينظر المرء إلى رأسه الذي يستمر دون انقطاع إلى ما بعد حافة السلطانية. حتى إن واحدة من اللوحات التي تبدو أول الأمر على أنها تصميم كرمة متداخل، يتضح على أنها كرمة بأزهار ذات رؤوس بشرية. ويشير هذا الخيال الجامح إلى أن مصدر السلطانية يعود لحقبة ما بعد المنغوليين التي تم فيها إدخال تحسينات على تصاميم منغولية موجودة سابقاً والبناء عليها.

الأمر المثير هو أن للسلطانية "حياة ثانية" مختلفة عن حياتها الأولى. حيث قام أحد الحرفيين بإضافة أحرف أرمنية إلى الجانب الداخلي منها، وهو ما يشير ربما إلى أنه ربما تم استخدامها لغاية متعلقة بطقسٍ مسيحي.
