Silver patera

-700/-600

Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo

Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo
Linares (Jaén), Spain

This oval patera with central omphalus surrounded by two circular moldings corresponds to an element of luxury that was used as regalia of a tomb in Iberian time, specifically as the cover of a cinerary urn, that was found casually in mid-twentieth century in one of the necropolis near Castulo.

The manufacture and material, as well as their origin explain the existence of an aristocracy that controlled the trade. The typology of this patera, influenced by oriental aesthetics, shows that the origin of the Iberian society is due largely to the commercial influence of societies in the Eastern Mediterranean.
