On the top of the big column. Saint Simon (Peter) the apostle points the way to the pilgrims towards Rome on the Via Francigena. On the roll the inscription: SIMON APOSTOLUS EUNDI ROMAM DEMONSTRAT HANC VIAM (Simon the Apollte points that this way goes to Rome). The sculpture, the only one from Canterbury to Rome with so clear a wording, is carved in an only block of sandstone.
