On the roll the inscription: SIMON APOSTOLUS EUNDI ROMAM DEMONSTRAT HANC VIAM (Simon the Aposlte points that this way goes to Rome).The sculpture, the only one from Canterbury to Rome with so clear a wording, is carved in an only block of sandstone.
