Singing Bridge, Hilo, Hawaii

The "Singing Bridge" spans the Wailuku River, just north of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. The original railway bridge was washed away by the 1946 tsunami which devastated Hilo. There is a famous photograph of the 1946 tsunami wave washing into this bridge. The central span of the current bridge is now constructed of iron-grating so that a tsunami wave might pass through the bridge rather than destroying it, and so the bridge hums or "sings" as vehicles traverse it.
