Paintings of the ten symbols of longevity were used during celebrations of the Lunar New Year, or bestowed as gifts from the royal family. On this folding screen, a court garden is depicted in deep colors as the world of the immortals, full of symbols of eternal life such as the sun, water, stones, mountains, clouds, pine trees, herbs of eternal youth, and cranes.
