Architect, town planner and landscape designer Sir Frederick Gibberd (1908-1984) with his wife Patricia (1926-2006), photographed at their Marsh Lane home in Harlow, Essex, in 1972. Sir Frederick was appointed master planner of Harlow New Town in 1946 and he created his garden on the outskirts of Harlow from 1956 until his death in 1984. The garden occupies 9 acres of a 14-acre site in a small valley, sloping down to the Pincey Brook. Sir Frederick and Lady Gibberd were both members of the Harlow Art Trust and she encouraged him to commission and purchase sculpture for the garden.
