Sir Michael Tippett (1905–1998) was a student at the RCM from 1923–8 and 1930–2, studying both composition and conducting. Pannett's portrait dates from a watershed point in Tippett's career, coinciding with the composition of the Second Symphony and the opera King Priam, which mark the beginning of his modernist period.
