Sire, this shroud is well worth the cross

PELLERIN19th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

If the Battle of Ulm only killed few French troops, some 500 soldiers succumbed their wounds before the Austrians surrendered.
This plate features one of those fallen soldiers who, as the moment of his last breath comes, continues to cheer on his comrades.
The Emperor, noticing him, throws his cloak at him and promises him the Legion of Honor if he manages to bring it back to him at the end of the battle. The soldier exclaims that the shroud given to him by the Emperor is enough for him, before succumbing. Later, the soldier was buried in this same cloak.
This plate then has come to depict, in addition to a Napoleon close to his soldiers, the respect and almost religious adoration that his men can show him.
