One of a set of paintings depicting the lineage of Karma Kagyu school masters, this portrait of Situ Panchen enjoyed a special authority among his students and successors. He is pictured as a venerable gray-haired master, presumably in his sixties. The physical appearance of Situ Panchen in this painting tends to support a dating to the late 1750s or later. The minor figures above include the long-life goddess White Tara (upper left), with whom Situ had a special relationship, and who was also included in prayers for the aged Situ Panchen’s continued longevity.
