Six-pointed Star Tile

early 13th century AD

The Khalili Collections

The Khalili Collections

The six-pointed star tile shows a moon-faced dancer, barefoot with spotted trousers and a long-sleeved tunic above her waist pulled aside by her gestures. The ground bears a bird and half-palmettes in reserve. The unglazed back of the tile bears a partial ghost image from another six-pointed lustre tile. Six-pointed star tiles, which are comparatively rare, would have been combined with hexagonal tiles, doubtless in contrasting colours, to give an all-over tessellation.
