The British started building a railway in Sierra Leone at the end of the 19th century. It became the Sierra Leone National Railway but it closed in 1975. Beatles Lantern Club built a lantern in the form of a train in 1997. The locomotive’s skeleton (like that of the rest of the train) was made from strips of palm pith, wire and nails, reinforced with fence sticks. (Palm pith comes from the midribs of raffia palm branches and fence sticks are cut from mangrove swamps or the monkey apple tree.)
