This sketch expresses the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven after her earthly life, with a group of witnesses below and a host of angels above. Morelli painted this subject on the ceiling of the Palatine Chapel in the Royal Palace of Naples in 1864. This sketch probably served as a prepratory sheet modelled after the painting, in order for prints to be reproduced.
