Sketch of the First Baptist Church

Built in 1833 and opened in 1834, the First Baptist Church of Washington remained in its location on 10th Street for 26 years, before leaving this building vacant and in need of repairs. Two years later, in 1861, John T. Ford rented the space and reconfigured it into a theatre he called Ford’s Atheneum.
