Conrad Martens was employed as ship's artist on HMS Beagle during the period in which Charles Darwin was onboard as the ship's naturalist. Martens joined the ship in Montevideo in November 1833 and was a member of the crew for two years. This sketch shows a man sleeping on a balcony in Valparaiso, Chile. Martens continued to travel and sketch after leaving the Beagle, finally settling in Australia.
