National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

A cow hide plate, shaped by a man for use by women in placing grain or hard porridge(ugali). The hide is shaped round using a sharp knife and the holes in the middle were made as a result of the owner cutting vegetables/ meat on the surface thus making the knife cut through the plate. Skin plates are also used to dry grain in the sim and to hold flour while grinding on stone.
