The title of the photograph probably refers to the 1981 Grateful Dead album featuring cover art of a skull wearing a crown of roses. Flack previously used the image for a large painting called Invocation (1982).
The dye-transfer process--created by printing cyan, magenta, or yellow on separate plates--allowed Flack to produce highly saturated colors and nuanced details. She was assisted in this process, for all 12 prints in the set, by Guy Stricherz.
