Zhao Shao'ang is one of the representative artists of the Lingnan School of Painting. Metaphors conveyed by imageries are often introduced in his works, as seen in this painting with an anti-war theme. The striking visual impact of the sombre skull and the offering of white azaleas conjure up a strong sense of pathos. It may well be an externalisation of his personal traumas from the war years.
