The Proconsul africanus is an ape considered a possible ancestor of greater apes and humans. This ape lived betweel 23 to 14 million years ago. Several species of the genus Proconsul have been discovered by Leakey's expedition to Rusinga Island in Lake Victoria between 1947-1948.
