Slab or "huntboard"

The use of the term “huntboard” is a twentieth-century practice indelibly attached to the numerous tall, small sideboards that are noted as a characteristic form in the lower Southern Piedmont. Nineteenth-century records referred to this form as a “slab” or “sideboard.” Collectors throughout the twentieth century have focused on the importance of slabs in communicating the aesthetic of this region, functioning as a symbol of hospitality and abundance.
