LEE KYONG-YUN

Horim Museum

Horim Museum
Seoul, South Korea

This is a collection of paintings by Lee Kyong-yun(1545-1611) in a book-type form, which consists of two landscape paintings and seven figure-paintings. The postscripts were written by the literati of mid-Joseon dynasty Choi Lib (1539-1612), who was a contemporary of Lee. All of the paintings have a peculiar ambience that is also very elegant-Lee focused on portraying the details of the noblemen; the wrinkles of their clothes are sharp and their postures are accurate. The backgrounds, on the contrary, are simplified with rough and minimal strokes. Lee is a representative painter of mid-Joseon dynasty along with Kim Si (1524-1593). He played a leading role in adopting and settling the Che school's landscape painting style.
