There are various ways and techniques to build houses from wood. One of them is the so-called log construction. The demand for straight-trunked wood is very high in log construction compared to other timber construction methods. This is why this form of building was widespread, especially in densely wooded areas - including the Bavarian Alpine region. The example here is a historic building from the 16th century that stands in the Glentleiten open-air museum and was built using squared timber log construction. In log construction, the walls consist of tree trunks stacked horizontally on top of each other, the stability of which is created by the corner joints. Coniferous wood, for example spruce or fir, is usually used for this type of construction. These are comparatively easy to work with and grow preferentially in damp, cold climates, such as those found in alpine zones or the low mountain ranges.
