Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

The Small Tortoiseshell belongs to the brush-footed butterflies (Nymphalidae). Since its caterpillars feed on stinging nettles, it is also known as the “nettle butterfly” in Germany. This widespread butterfly can be found in many regions of Asia and Europe, where it occurs up to 3,500 meters in elevation. Mountain forms are often larger and paler, while animals in northern Europe are smaller and darker.
