Smedley's Hydro Terrace and Winter Gardens

This photograph shows the south facing terrace of Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment in Matlock, Derbyshire, (commonly known as Smedley's Hydro). In the distance can be seen the large glass house of the Winter Gardens

Smedley's Hydro was established by local industrialist, John Smedley, in 1853. It became the largest hydro in the country and a sister establishment was later built in Southport. The building is now the head quarters of Derbyshire County Council.
